Specialty coffee · Kuala Lumpur

Slow coffee
for a fast city.

Single-origin beans, roasted in small batches and brewed by people who remember your name. A neighbourhood coffee lab, somewhere between the LRT and your next meeting.

01 · Our story

Kawan means friend.

We opened Kawan for the regulars. The ones who drop in for a quick kopi and stay for an hour, who trade book tips with the barista, who know the pastry case sells out by eleven. Good coffee takes time, so we take ours, and we always save you a seat.

02 · Cherry to cup

From cherry
to cup.

Four steps, no shortcuts. Here's what happens before your coffee reaches the counter.

  1. Coffee cherries ripening on the branch

    Step 1:

    Source

We buy from small farms we can name, and pay a little more for the care it takes to pick only the ripe cherries.

  2. Freshly roasted beans pouring from the roaster drum into the cooling tray

    Step 2:

    Roast

Small batches, twice a week, in the back room. The beans on the shelf are never more than a few days old.

  3. A pour-over blooming in a paper filter above a glass server

    Step 3:

    Brew

Weighed, timed and tasted. Every recipe is written on the bar, and every barista can tell you why.

  4. A hand setting a cup of black coffee on a wooden counter

    Step 4:

    Serve

Then it's yours. Take it to the window seat, or stay at the bar and talk beans with us.

04 · The Lab

Where we nerd out
about coffee.

Behind the bar there's a tiny roastery and a tasting table. It's where recipes get tested, and now and then argued over.

05 · Visit

Pull up a chair.

Plants by the window, stools at the bar and a long table for slow afternoons. Come with a friend; leave with a few more.
